The Forgotten Disney Princess: Meg!

So, you probably don’t follow Disney news too closely, and I admit, neither do I- unless it concerns my childhood memories. I don’t remember watching the Hercules movie, but I do recall being at my grandparents house, straining to stay awake late at night at a sleepover, so I could watch an episode from the Hercules TV series. (Spoiler alert: I fell asleep anyway. FAIL)

Despite my non familiarity with the movie, I have watched clips of some of the musical scores on youtube, and REALLY wanted to make some fan art! Especially of Meg- aka, the “not-actually-an-official-disney-princess Princess”. She’s not the only non-disney-princess Princess either- some of you might still be sore about Jane not making the cut (Tarzan is so underrated. Yay Phil Collins!). There are a few others, but mainly, Meg and Jane are the more obvious ones. Without further a due, here’s the process:

I erased around the edges and used a purple-pinkĀ for the “glow” around her from the water (which I decided not to draw).

Glowing for the right side of her hair.^^^

Light brown to darken her tan.

A little pink to keep the skin rose-y.

Lastly, I went over her hair with a dark brown to smooth it all out and closer match her dark brunette mane.

At least out loud, I won’t say she’s an official Disney Princess….but me thinks it!

Do You Want to Build a Snowman?

One Frozen drawing is never enough! I drew this before the Elsa one, so this was my FIRST Frozen drawing EVER!!! Just don’t get too excited, because it’s featuring a sad portion of the movie (as you will soon find I sometimes do). So just let me warm you up with the cold lyrics that fit with this scene- let them sink in while you view the process:

“Elsa, please… I know you’re in there.
People are asking where you’ve been.
They say “have courage”, and I’m trying to.
I’m right out here for you; just let me in.
We only have each other;
It’s just you and me.
What are we gonna do?

Do you wanna build a snowman?”

Now for Elsa! Important to note is that when drawing big shindigs of pictures like this where it’s very involved and tedious (opposed to a sketch or freehand comic), you should expect to increase the drawing time with every character you add to the page, weatherĀ small or large. Odds are if it takes you seven hours to draw one face, it will take you 14 for two, even if they’re both on one page. Don’t freak out when it is time consuming- just enjoy the process, man!

Okay, obvious errors on my part, I know. Sizes are off (caterpillar eyebrows!!) and shapes are wrong (Sorry Elsa). But hey, it probably made you sort of sad, didn’t it? Then my work here is done. IF IT MAKES YOU CONVEY EMOTIONS, I’VE DONE MY JOB! Maybe my next post will convey some different emotions? Check back soon to find out!

Tangled’s Rapunzel

Hey, so I saw Tangled pretty recently (I was shocked to hear it’d been four years since it came out! Man was I behind!) and although I did like it to an extent, it wasn’t my favorite. I will probably like it more the next time I watch it, because I know how these Disney things go- they grow on you.

What I did LOVE about the movie was the music (I sing ‘When Will My Life Begin?’ Almost everyday), and more importantly than that- the animation! Rapunzel was so cute! I can’t wait to make more Tangled drawings- maybe with Pascal or Flynn next time?

The eyes were super easy- to make them look real, use pink and gray! Leave a spot white for the highlight and you’ll be golden!

Now just finish up with some magical beams flowing around (you know, the usual ‘just got a haircut’ ones that we all experience) and we’re all finished!

Again, this isn’t perfect. If you compare it to the original screencap, it has it’s obvious errors, but for the most part, we know who this is, which makes things all good in the end.

Rapunzel was my first official Disney piece of artwork, so let’s give credit where credit is due: YAY RAPUNZEL!!

Frozen’s Elsa

Okay, so we’ve all seen Frozen, and we all have a favorite character. My favorite is…Olaf! But today I’m showing you my drawing of Elsa, so hopefully you’ll forgive me for not doing the warm-hug-loving snowman yet. Maybe in the future, kids!

Okay, at this point, I was like, “oh no, the shading looks like a 5-o-clock shadow!” So…

I tried to lighten it with my eraser a bit and moved on. Because there’s nothing a good head of hair won’t fix!

Ahh, that’s better.

Truth be told, I’m not THRILLED with how this turned out. I didn’t place her features properly, and thus, it doesn’t look exactly like her (ex: her eyes distance apart). Her lip color was also somehow inconceivable for me to replicate (you know, pink) so it turned out purple. The eye shadow she has on is the reason I drew the picture, and thus, I have Elsa’s eye-shadow to thank for this website. Without her makeup statement, I wouldn’t have discovered my love for Drawing Disney. Well, actually that’s not totally true. Elsa’s predecessor, Rapunzel, technically got me started, but Elsa’s eye-shadow made me want to keep going!
